But, with the nation's First Lady, Michelle Obama, and the Food Police pressuring school districts to replace vending machines that offer students unhealthy choices, The Motley Monk isn't sure this is one outcome Mrs. Obama had in mind. But, then, maybe it is one she is comfortable with.
According to a Los Angeles Times article, students enrolled at Shippensburg University---a public institution of ~8.3k students located about 130 miles from both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and nestled between mountain ridges in the Cumberland Valley---can slide $25 into a vending machine at the Etter Health Center and receive the "morning-after" pill (the Plan B One Step emergency abortofacient). The vending machine also sells students condoms, decongestants and pregnancy tests.

The idea for making this particular vending machine available was the result of a survey concerning health center services at Shippensburg in which 85% of the respondents supported making Plan B available. The machine has been around for about two years.
Shippensburg doesn't cover or subsidize Plan B, although it is is cheaper from the Shippensburg vending machine than at off-campus pharmacies. The price is set by Shippensburg's cost to the pharmaceutical company.
Federal law makes the "morning after" pill available without a prescription to anyone 17 or older. Shippensburg administrators note that all current students are that 17 or older.
A junior at Shippensburg, Chelsea Wehking, couldn't be more elated:
I think it's great that the school is giving us this option. I've heard some kids say they'd be too embarrassed [to go into town, Shippensburg, permanent population ~6k, and buy Plan B].
A Shippensburg senior, Matthew Kanzler, said that a lot of students at the school weren't even aware of the machine until recently, most support the idea but not all. Kanzler said: "It's a way for students to get the help or care they need."
When The Motley Monk was in college, student "health centers" were called "dispensaries." Shippensburg University has put quite a different spin on that term, no?
Let the discussion begin...

I was wondering how TMM would blame this situation on the Obama administration. Thank you for blaming Mrs. Obama, the real villian in America. Jesus, you people!

P.S. Have you classified me as a troll yet? I hear that's what some blog sites do to people who disagree with the outlook of the purveyor
TMM is wondering how LP possibly found TMM blaming Mrs. Obama. Given that the nation's First Lady is a pro-abortion, it may be that she's happy about the vending machine. But, blame her? Read a little more beyond what your ideology limits you to read!
ReplyDeleteAs for engaging in ad hominems, TMM leaves that to those on the political left. It's their primary strategy of choice when they find the facts inconvenient.
Furthermore and insofar as The Motley Monk is concerned, as long as a commentator is civil and does not use profanity, he doesn't delete their comments or, worse yet, respond by calling them names like "Troll," even if The Motley Monk might hold the private opinion that they are.
