Equality Matters---a GLBT advocacy group---is claiming that the tax records of Chick-fil-A's charitable arm, WinShape, indicate that in recent years WinShape has donated millions to anti-homosexual causes.
That revelation has caused quite a kerfuffle at Northeastern University (NU), according to an article in the Boston Globe. In a 31 to 5 vote (with 8 abstentions), NU's Student Senate voted against allowing a Chick-fil-A to open in NU's student center.
Judging by the magnitude of the defeat for Chick-fil-A, The Motley Monk would observe that NU students must have really gotten themselves worked up into a lather over Chick-fil-A's alleged exclusivity and lack of diversity. To wit, one NU senior and Student Senator, Taylor Cotter, has been pleading with NU administrators to terminate negotiations with Chick-fil-A since she learned of the plan to open a Chick-fil-A in the NU student center more than one year ago.
In response to the Student Senate vote, NU issued a statement:
Based on the outcome of Monday night’s senate resolution, Chick-fil-A will not be part of the group of vendors considered for the renovation of the student center.
In a separate statement, a NU spokesperson added:
We are proud of the decision that affirms our University's commitment to be an inclusive, diverse community that is respectful of all.Cotter was gleeful:
I'm very excited and really, really surprised this is the decision [the NU's administration] came to. We didn't expect them to cut the contract with Chick-fil-A.
In the past, the President of Chick-fil-A, Dan Cathy, has defended the company, saying that it is not "anti-anybody...Our mission is to create raving fans."

The Motley Monk is one of those fans. He raves about the boneless chicken sandwich with dill pickles on a buttery bun. Add some Chick-fil-A coleslaw to the sandwich and life doesn't get better!
Does that make The Motley Monk a bigot?
Let the discussion begin...

I generally avoid chicken, except for the healthy parts like BBQ wings.
ReplyDeleteFascism always begins with 'enlightened' individuals attacking, degrading and marginalizing their enemies ALWAYS in their effort to guide society, teach and correct injustice.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the truth and justice pushed forth thru such means, usually wreaks of a more sinister agenda.
i note that our own Mater Ecclesia and the CLDS were quite vocal and financially generous in the Prop 8 fight in california. (BYW, how nuts is it that Rick Santorum lost the catholic vote in Michigan to a Mormon bishop, for the love of God. But I digress....) I actually have not tried this particular product. Is it even available in the Chicago area? After my grabber, I am trying to cut back a lot on fried foods. But that's all about me, i guess. LOL. Libral Pilgrim
ReplyDeleteFascism, Prop 8 fights, whatever. Does this mean I'm NOT allowed to like BBQ wings ??
ReplyDeleteNot according to the First Lady.... She knows what is good for you and your kids. Your Dem friends in NYC won't allow you to enjoy them, either!
