Why?
Their rhetoric "evokes the past myth of 'welfare queens' and inflaming other racist caricatures." As a consequence, the candidates' rhetoric is "irresponsible, immoral and unworthy of political leaders."
The "progressive" policy group denouncing this rhetoric which "perpetuat[es] ugly racial stereotypes on the campaign trail" is Faith in Public Life, a self-described group of "Catholic leaders who recognize that the moral scandals of racism and poverty remain a blemish on the American soul" and who note that "some presidential candidates now courting 'values voters' seem to have forgotten that defending human life and dignity does not stop with protecting the unborn." The letter, posted January 19, 2012, is available on the organization's website.
So, who are these "Catholic leaders"?
They include the heads of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, Pax Christi USA, and Network. Other co-signatories included theology, political science or religious studies professors from St. Louis University, Boston College, Fordham University, Catholic University, the University of Notre Dame, Xavier University, St. John's University in Minnesota, St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Loyola University in Chicago, Fairfield University, the University of Dayton, and Santa Clara University.

Reading the materials posted to the group's website, The Motley Monk would suggest that Faith In Public Life's espoused support of "progressive" social policies is indicative that its letter is nothing more an attack upon President Obama's political opponents and a thinly-veiled effort to promote the President and his administration's policies.
Let the discussion begin...

I agree with TMM's assessment of this latest farce from the catholic Left, up to his use of the word "thinly-veiled" to describe their efforts to promote Obama's socialism. There is nothing "thinly-veiled" about them.
ReplyDeleteThe Progressive Left that leads the Church and calls itself Catholic has no problem serving those who serve them the best $$$$, I mean deal.
ReplyDeleteToo bad these 'enlightened' few forget:
Evil always disguises itself as Good.
These so-called Catholic Leaders will learn when it is too late. The Regime, The Progressives, The Humanists, The open-minded, fair-minded Left will sell them out and discard their right to practice their religion-free of government interference, as soon as power is consolidated.
Washington:
Bows to Saudi Kings
Honors Chinese Communists in the White House
Caves to the whims of Russia
Looks at Islamic-fascism as a figment of conservative imagination
Calls wannabe terrorists like Bill Ayers - educators
Has no problem with 'holy' men like Farrakhan
Looks the other way when goons like Hoffa preach hate and threaten violence
BUT mention God, Christ, Christian Churches or Faith and you will be branded a close-minded, reactionary, homophobic, xenophobe
Our leaders have been seduced by Evil.
To say that former Speaker Gingrich and former Senator Santorum are not playing the race card in the deep South where primaries are being held is to be wilfully ignorant.
ReplyDeleteRacism is a sin. Just like adultery. Jesus Christ; you people!
Most of the Americans on food stamps are white, not black. EVERYONE knows this, including GOP voters in the "deep South". Speaker Gingrich was referring to the dependency culture that the current US President supports through myriad means, including by frustrating small business owners to death through overregulation and by spending the country into a national debt the like of which ought to make Greece and Italy feel good about themselves by comparison. What Gingrich opposes is the Europeanization of the USA into more of a dysfunctional welfare state than it already is. There is nothing racist about his point of view, as Dr. Thomas Sowell and Herman Cain, among other African-Americans, have been saying all along. If anything, it's the dependency culture so native to Obama, Reid and Pelosi that continues the cycle of poverty in the US and that threatens to ruin any opportunities that people have to escape poverty once and for all.
ReplyDeleteEternal City is correct...
ReplyDeleteHowever, the Left always uses the race card. The Left needs a society of victims. The Left needs lemmings who believe government is smarter, knows more and is needed to help people.
If there we no lemmings, no victims, or uneducated people who would need the likes of Pelosi, Reid, Sharpton, Jesse, the elitist media, etc.. etc....
The business of poverty, ignorance and oppression is BIG BUSINESS for alot of people.
